Celebrating Ten Years

This past October, we reached a significant milestone: it is ten years since we ventured out on our own, with nothing more than a desire to make cool stuff on the internet, and to work on great projects with like-minded clients and partners. Since 2001, we’ve steadily built a roster of clients, many of whom we continue to work with in an ongoing capacity, to extend and improve their online offerings as the state of the art moves forward (which happens literally each and every day).

Cactuslab has transitioned from the duo it was for its first five years, into an eight-person studio (nine over the summer with Christian Sheehan proving his worth as our student intern). We’ve also made the move into native iOS application development over the past three years; this now accounts for as much as a third of our day-to-day work, and has begun to inform our approach to designing for the desktop as well.

This year, we’ve also put some effort into a little side project which we’ll share more about next year. We’re delighted to be where we are, building cool stuff with talented people, and making plans for the next act and beyond. And we wouldn’t have arrived here without tasteful clients and the fun, dedicated team that keep the bunsen burners lit behind the scenes. Happy holidays, see you next year!

New work for Max

Last month saw the launch of an all-new site for Max, a company we have a great working history with. This time around we've developed the shopping experience from the ground up, drawing on Max's deep knowledge of online commerce, and integrating with its existing enterprise services. We've put particular effort into tuning the performance of both the site and our Supermodel CMS in order to withstand the high traffic levels the site experiences, while retaining personalised options such as persistent pagination preferences and wishlists.

And this week the new site we built for Mac email client software Sparrow has gone live. A small but satisyfing project!

New Year, New Staff

We must apologise for the radio silence, so to make up for it here’s a brand new Cactuslab site… Our technicians and artists have administered a makeover, cleaning out plenty of the old to make room for some shiny new. Our Portfolio is now right up to date, and highlights a few of the favourite projects we’ve been crafting, including the all-new Public Address and iOS apps for Realestate.co.nz, North & South magazine and Steinlager Pure. (Public Address and North & South have been nominated by the Onyas judges in this year’s awards!) We’re thrilled to have welcomed Robert Payne and Hayden Hunter to the team during 2010, and they've already been instrumental in the success of the above-mentioned projects. Lastly, to all those who’ve been knocking incessantly up on the sixth floor, we’re now at level 3 of the same building, with a little more room to stretch our legs.

Cactuslab.com v2.0

You might have noticed a few changes around here... in the three years since we built our last website the web has changed, and we’ve changed the way we approach and build websites. Since early 2002 we’ve built many client sites using our own content management system, Supermodel. It offers a secure, web-based admin interface for site owners to maintain all aspects of a site, including text, images and multimedia assets. More recently we’ve adopted new best practice for website construction through the use of web standards. The standards approach separates presentation from content; produces leaner code (which downloads faster, works in more browsers and is easier to maintain) and promotes increased accessibility for screen readers, mobile devices and search engines. This website now makes use of both Supermodel and web standards to afford us the same benefits it has afforded many of our clients. If these considerations are important to you, perhaps we should talk.
